We are one month into 2019 and the Terra Nova team has been buzzing about the rise of so many fresh home trends that the new year is already bringing. We believe these trends offer something for everyone, whether you lean towards minimalistic design or are excited by a loud statement element in your home. Here are some of our favorite new design trends that are bound to inspire your home this year:
Serving Boldness
We’re seeing kitchens full of personality using many bold design elements, departing a little bit from the all white we’ve been used to seeing. From bright and patterned backsplashes to mixed metals or a statement color, there are infinite ways to build interest in a room with only one feature (or all of them at once).
Monochromatic
If you’re loving a particular color right now, the time is right to lean all the way into it! Monochrome no longer means just black or white. You can still build depth and interest in a room using only one color by incorporating different shades and textures through many different elements of a room.
A Natural Look
The Terra Nova team is especially loving the return to natural elements in design. Materials like lightly-stained wood give us a sense of warmth in a home that we love. You can easily update your all-white kitchen by adding in some wooden elements like new countertops, cabinetry, or shelving for a more comfortable vibe.
Wabi-Sabi
Another great trend that continues the concept of earthy, natural design is the rise of wabi-sabi. A Japanese concept that symbolizes embracing imperfection, wabi-sabi decor includes finding the beauty in anything that looks a little unfinished. We’re seeing Japanese design as a major influence in our homes lately, particularly with the soaring popularity of Marie Kondo and her joyous approach to tidying up. Wabi-sabi gives us a similar mindset, providing handmade, natural, perfectly-imperfect design elements that bring a comfortable but still minimal look for your home.
Statement Ceilings
(See more photos from this project!)
We’re looking up at a great trend on the rise: statement ceilings. Check out this barrel-vault ceiling we did for a recent client of ours. This was one of several different ceiling treatments that were featured as part of this project. Whether you’re leaving your ceiling beams exposed for a beautiful natural feeling, looking for an exciting pop of color or even a fun pattern for your newest room refresh, your ceiling is begging for some love this year!
Cavern Clay
The 2019 Color of the Year, Sherwin-Williams "Cavern Clay," is yet another continuation of the trend towards earthy tones. This color helps us feel renewed and energized while still keeping things warm, simple, and down-to-earth. It coordinates well into other design trends that we are seeing this year. It can be the perfect pop of drama to any space, or as an accent color (think leather, wood or terra-cotta pottery). No matter how you use it, Sherwin-Williams’ 'Cavern Clay' is sure to refresh your space!
