We’ve set our clocks forward, the sun is staying out longer every day and the temperature is warming up…it must be Spring! The Terra Nova Team is here with some ideas to inspire your simple springtime floral arrangements. Especially now with “Stay at Home” orders in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, sprucing up your home environment with flowers can bring beauty and happiness to your life. A planter can hold many possibilities, so let’s get your hands a little dirty while adding a beautiful pop of color to your home!
Any space can be enriched by adding planters: under your windows, on each side of your front door, lining a pathway in your yard or even inside pots as accents to room decor. We’re seeing many retail stores stock up on pre-potted arrangements, but these can be easily made by any DIY enthusiast with some extra time on their hands (which most of us have more of right now!). It can also be a great craft project do to as a family, or learning experience for children.
Try to think outside of the “box” when creating your planters. Just about any container can be used or repurposed into a planting container. Get creative and have fun with it. You can use spray paint to spruce up old pots, or if you’re feeling extra crafty even hand paint and decorate items to use. For homemade wood boxes, take a trip to the hardware store to select your favorite wood and stains to use.
- DIY tip: If you don’t have the tools to cut your wood at home, many home improvement stores will cut it for you if you provide the measurements.
Once you have the perfect planter picked out or created, it’s time to choose the flowers. We recommend a variety of plants, mixing flowers with greenery. Add interest by including different colors, textures and shapes. You can create new focal points or compliment your existing decor with the color scheme you choose.
For example, the Pantone’s color of the year last year, Living Coral, has it’s most beautiful expression in florals. Tulips, dahlias, hibiscus, peonies and hyacinths are wonderful springtime flowers that come in beautiful shades of coral.
We also love to use a lot of greenery mixed in with the florals. Foliage, grasses and vines can add depth to the arrangement. They can also add a nice, full backdrop to really make the flower colors you choose pop.
- DIY tip: To ensure your planter will thrive, look at tags on the plants and choose ones that will work with the lighting conditions for your specific planter. Also group plants together that require the same amount of watering.
Finally, make sure you you factor in plant height and growth type when making your selections. Some will put off tall chutes of flowers, while others are mounding or trail in a vine. Go for volume: all of our favorite arrangements look like the plants are spilling out of their boxes in a brilliant display. Regardless of what you choose, just have some fun with it! Once complete you’ll have a hand crafted display of nature’s beauty in your own home that will hopefully bring you joy daily in a season full of uncertainty!
